Make the Goal Clear and State it in Specific Dollar Amounts

Title the campaign so the donors know clearly what you are asking them to support. For example, "The Steinway Piano Campaign," "The Boston Piano Fund," or the "Steinway Initiative". State the specific amount that you want to raise in order to purchase and maintain the instruments you need. Don't be shy.

Appoint a Chair and Select a Committee

Appoint one organized, enthusiastic person to spearhead your fundraising efforts who will assemble a committee to execute the mechanics of the program. Delegated responsibilities and clear, realistic goals assigned to several people will insure that your piano campaign is successful.

Set Time Limits

Announce a specific beginning and end to the campaign. Some examples are "The new Steinway piano must be in place by the holiday season," or "By the start of next semester 20 new Boston pianos will be in our practice rooms." When these goals are made known and the end of the campaign is in sight, a strategy can be put forth.

Make Your Campaign Known

Make sure that everyone in your organization knows that you need to raise money for new pianos. Spread the word in your community. People cannot give you money if they don't know you need it. Publicize your goal in creative ways and don't limit yourself to your institution's publications. A great example of the is SAGU initiative to become an All-Steinway School on Facebook. Consider a dramatic launch to your campaign that can capture the attention of your local media.

Recognize Your Donors Publicly

Whether they admit it or not, most people welcome public recognition. Make sure to recognize all the donations you receive, (unless the donor request anonymity) by engraving their names on a commemorative plaque. if an individual is the sole donor of a new piano, you can acknowledge his/her gift with a personalized plaque mounted on the inside of the piano rim.

Use Premiums and Incentives to Increase Gift Sizes

This has two advantages. First it provides a subtle way to suggest a donation amount. And second, if the item you offer is both desirable and not readily available in local stores, many people will give the necessary donation simply to receive it.
